Agriculture

Agriculture in the Union Territory of Ladakh :

Agriculture in Ladakh is characterized by its unique high-altitude environment, where traditional practices have adapted to the harsh climatic conditions. The main crops include barley, wheat, and various pulses, cultivated in a short growing season. Farmers rely on glacial meltwater for irrigation, making water management crucial. In recent years, there has been a shift towards organic farming, driven by market demand and the region's pristine environment.

Acreage Under Cultivation :

Wheat and Barley are the traditional crops of Ladakh and are staple food for the people. Of the total 22,436 hectares under cultivation, Wheat (4,471 Ha) and Barley (5,388 Ha) occupy 43.94% of the total area sown.

Cropping Patterns :

Mono Cropping patterns are prevalent in UT Ladakh. The period of sowing of Wheat and Barley is from March to May, with harvesting from August to October.

Irrigation Facilities :

The major irrigation facilities in UT Ladakh are canals, which account for about 100% of the total irrigated area.

Farm Mechanization :

Farm mechanization is essential for transforming subsistence farming into commercial farming. There is a growing trend to adopt new machinery, including tractors, power tillers, rotavators, power weeders, and combined harvesters, to address labor shortages.

Allied Activities :

Ancillary activities include dairy, fisheries, plantation, and horticulture, which support agricultural and allied activities effectively.
